| Aanvullende informatie |
Issued as part of Russia's long-running series dedicated to architectural monuments of the Russian Orthodox Church, this piece commemorates the Novospassky Monastery in Moscow — the burial site of the Romanov family predating the dynasty's rise to the throne. The monastery was founded in the 14th century by Ivan III, who relocated it to its current site on the banks of the Moskva River in 1490.
Soviet authorities closed and heavily damaged the complex after 1917, using it at various points as a prison camp. Full restoration and return to the Russian Orthodox Church did not occur until 1991.
