Transdniestria's unrecognised status means its coinage occupies a peculiar legal void — none of it is accepted as currency outside the strip of territory between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border, and even internally it competes with Russian roubles in daily use. The MGRES designation refers to the Moldavskaya GRES power station in Cuciurgan, a Soviet-era thermal plant that remains one of the largest electricity generators in the region and supplies power to both Moldova and Transdniestria, generating an ongoing political dependency that neither side is comfortable acknowledging.
