Dubossary sits on the Dniester River in a strip of territory that declared independence from Moldova in 1990 but remains unrecognized by any UN member state. The hydroelectric station there predates the conflict entirely — it was a Soviet-era installation, completed in 1954, that now operates within an economy running on its own currency accepted nowhere outside Transnistria's borders.
