Reverse description The reverse presents a richly detailed commemorative composition honouring the Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265–1321). At centre stands the monument to Dante in Verona, while to the left a scene depicts Charon ferrying Dante and Virgil across the infernal waters, rendered in the manner of Gustave Doré's celebrated illustrations to The Divine Comedy; below, tormented figures of the damned represent Hell, while above, the radiant figures of Beatrice and angels evoke Paradise. To the right, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with Giotto's Campanile in Florence is portrayed in fine relief. The dates `1265` and `1321` appear in two lines beneath the Florentine architecture, and the Cyrillic legend `ДАНТЕ АЛИГЬЕРИ` (DANTE ALIGHIERI) arcs along the upper right rim.
