The Bukhara Soviet People's Republic was a short-lived Soviet client state established in 1920 after Red Army forces overthrew the Emirate of Bukhara — one of Central Asia's oldest Islamic monarchies. The new republic issued its own currency partly as a political gesture of economic independence, though in practice it remained firmly within the Soviet orbit. By 1924, the republic was dissolved and absorbed into the Uzbek and Tajik Soviet Socialist Republics during the Soviet national delimitation of Central Asia.

This 1922 issue came in the republic's final years, when Basmachi resistance was still active in the region and administrative control outside major towns was genuinely contested. The notes from this series circulated alongside Red Army scrip and earlier Emirate-era coinage, creating a chaotic local monetary environment.
