Ajman, smallest of the Trucial States with a population barely exceeding 4,000 in 1970, issued an extraordinary volume of gold commemoratives in the years immediately before federation — most of them cynically produced for the collector and bullion market rather than any domestic circulation. This piece honoring George Marshall was part of that wave. The former U.S. Secretary of State and architect of the European Recovery Program had been dead for over a decade by the time Ajman struck his likeness, which tells you everything about the curatorial logic at work.
