Ajman's 1970 commemorative gold series was part of a broader phenomenon unique to the Trucial States: small sheikhdoms with negligible numismatic traditions suddenly flooding the market with collector-targeted issues in the late 1960s and early 1970s, many produced by European mints with no meaningful connection to the honorees. Albert Luthuli, the South African Zulu chief and ANC president who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960, died in 1967 under house arrest near Groutville — struck by a train while his movements were still restricted by the apartheid government.

The circumstances of his death were never fully explained.
