Umm Al Qaiwain was among the smallest and most sparsely populated of the Trucial States when it issued this piece in 1970 — just months before the federation that would become the UAE was formally constituted in 1971. The emirate's coinage program was almost entirely aimed at the collector market rather than circulation, produced in limited quantities to generate revenue ahead of the political transition that would end its status as a separate issuing authority.
Ahmad II ruled until his death in 1981, but his coins effectively ceased with unification. This issue was one of a coordinated gold series across several Trucial States, all dated 1970 for the same reason.
