Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's accession following his July 1970 palace coup against his father, Said bin Taimur — a ruler so reclusive and resistant to modernization that he reportedly banned sunglasses, Western music, and the use of electricity without personal permission. Qaboos's quarter-century had by 1995 transformed Oman from one of the Arab world's most isolated states into a functioning modern economy, and the commemorative coin program surrounding National Day had by then become a consistent fixture of the Central Bank's output.
