Additional information

The International Year of Disabled Persons, declared by the UN for 1981, prompted a wave of commemorative issues from member states — most of them unremarkable silver pieces in standard weights. Yemen's piedfort is the exception. At roughly double the planchet thickness of the circulation strike, piedforts were almost never produced by Arab monetary authorities during this period, making this an unusual exercise in a minting tradition historically associated with French and British proof coinage.

KM#P1 designation confirms it as Yemen's first catalogued piedfort. The Central Bank issued it in extremely limited numbers, almost certainly for collector distribution rather than any domestic market.
