This piece commemorates the joint award of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize to de Klerk and Mandela — a pairing that remained politically uneasy long after the ceremony in Oslo. De Klerk's simultaneous acknowledgment of apartheid's wrongs and defense of his own role in its dismantling drew sharp criticism from Mandela publicly and repeatedly. The coin was struck fourteen years after that prize, by which point both men had been out of office for over a decade.
