Banque du Liban was established in 1964, replacing the Banque de Syrie et du Liban and finally severing Lebanon's monetary ties to the French-administered currency union it had shared with Syria since the Mandate period. This 25 piastres issue falls squarely within the relatively stable pre-civil war decade — the Lebanese pound held its own through most of the 1960s and early 1970s before the outbreak of hostilities in 1975 effectively collapsed the normal circulation economy. The KM#27.1 and 27.2 distinction reflects a die modification made during the production run, a minor but catalogued variation.
