Additional information

Issued to commemorate the diversion of the Nile at Aswan — the massive hydraulic engineering operation required before the High Dam's reservoir could begin filling — this coin appeared as Soviet and Egyptian engineers were actively redirecting one of the world's great rivers through a purpose-built channel. The project displaced over 90,000 Nubian inhabitants from villages that would soon be submerged beneath Lake Nasser.
