Reverse description The reverse presents a bold three-line Arabic inscription in large Naskh script occupying the central field, reading 'ضرب في مصر' (Struck in Egypt), divided by a horizontal baseline stroke characteristic of Ottoman coin design. The accession year in AH numerals '١٢٧٧' (1277) is prominently inscribed in the lower field. The regnal year, indicating the year of Sultan Abdulaziz's reign, appears in the upper portion of the legend. A beaded inner border frames the entire design, consistent with the obverse treatment.

Additional information

This piece belongs to the early coinage of Abdülaziz's reign, which began in 1861 following the death of Abdülmecid I. Egypt at this point was nominally an Ottoman province under Khedive Said Pasha, and its gold coinage carried Ottoman regnal years while functioning within a local monetary system increasingly shaped by European creditors. The Cairo mint was producing fractional gold denominations for a market where silver and billon dominated everyday commerce — these smaller gold pieces circulated primarily among merchants and officials.

KM#261 is tied to the first regnal year of Abdülaziz, making it among the earliest issues of a reign that would last until 1876.
