Sudan's 1987 coinage came at a moment of acute economic strain — the country was carrying one of the largest debt burdens in sub-Saharan Africa, and the IMF had suspended lending two years earlier following chronic arrears. The Central Bank was simultaneously managing a currency under severe depreciation pressure, which makes the production of a relatively heavy nickel brass coin at this denomination something of an anomaly for the period.
