Syria struck this issue in the years immediately following the Ba'ath Party's consolidation of power after the 1966 intra-party coup — a period of sharp political realignment that saw the country's coinage redesigned multiple times within a single decade. The three stars on the shield reflected the short-lived United Arab Republic aspiration, retained symbolically even after the union with Egypt had collapsed in 1961.
