Beschrijving keerzijde Central motif depicts a raised map of the African continent within a circular frame, flanked on either side by stylised wheat or palm fronds forming a wreath-like arrangement. Below the central circle, a ribbon cartouche bears the bilingual abbreviations 'OUA' (Organisation de l'Unité Africaine) to the left and 'OAU' (Organisation of African Unity) to the right, with further Arabic inscription below identifying the organisation. The legend 'SUMMIT MEETING KHARTOUM' curves along the upper periphery in Latin capitals. Additional Arabic text identifying the Organisation of African Unity appears in the lower field, all within a beaded border.

Aanvullende informatie

Sudan issued this piedfort in 1978 to mark the 15th Assembly of Heads of State of the Organisation of African Unity, held in Khartoum that July. Piedforts of this series were produced in multiple metals as collector pieces rather than circulation strikes — the copper version sits at the bottom of that hierarchy, above only the standard issue.

The OAU itself was in considerable internal tension by 1978, with disagreements over the Western Sahara question having already fractured bloc unity the previous year.
