The Organisation of African Unity summit was held in Khartoum in 1978, and Sudan issued this essai in connection with commemorative coinage marking that occasion. Essais in aluminium are pattern-stage pieces, struck to test dies and assess design legibility before a final alloy decision — they were never released for circulation and typically exist in very small quantities, often just a handful of examples per type.
Sudan's coinage output in this period was handled through foreign mints, and aluminium essais of this type rarely make it into public hands, having been retained by mint archives or acquired directly by specialists at the time of issue.
