The Golden Hind commemorative series from Guernsey drew on the island's proximity to the historic English privateering world — Francis Drake's circumnavigation of 1577–1580 aboard the original vessel remains the second circumnavigation of the globe in history. Guernsey issued several gold denominations in this series during the early 2000s, largely targeting the bullion gift market rather than circulation, and most examples were sold directly to collectors at issue price.
The .9167 fineness is standard 22-karat — the same alloy used for British sovereigns since 1817.
