Reverse description The reverse displays the crowned spade-shaped shield of the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom, from which hangs the pendant of the Order of the Garter depicting St George slaying the dragon. The shield is quartered with the three passant guardant lions of England in the first and fourth quarters, the rampant lion within a double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland in the second, and a harp for Ireland in the third, surmounted by St Edward's Crown. Tudor roses adorn the background field, while the East India Company mintmark EIC, with letters separated by radiating arrows, appears twice within the rim at left and right. The peripheral legend reads · DIRIGE DEUS · GRESSUS MEOS ·, a Latin motto meaning 'May the Lord direct my steps,' first employed on the celebrated Una and the Lion gold five-pound piece of 1839.
