Issued to mark the centenary of the Royal Air Force, founded on 1 April 1918 through the merger of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service — a consolidation bitterly opposed by the Admiralty, which had no desire to surrender control of its air arm. The RAF became the world's first independent air force, a structural decision that would directly influence how nearly every subsequent air power organised its military aviation.
