| 背面描述 | Standing allegorical figure of Britannia facing left, rendered in the Philip Nathan design. Britannia holds a long trident in her raised right hand, while her left hand bears an olive branch and a large shield decorated with the Union flag. The figure is depicted helmeted and draped in classical robes, evoking the traditional British personification of maritime strength and sovereignty. The legend BRITANNIA and the date appear around the upper field, with the inscription 1/4 OUNCE FINE GOLD positioned in the lower legend. The engraver's signature P.NATHAN is visible in the field. |

The British Sovereign series was revived in 1979 after a hiatus dating to 1917, and the quarter-ounce Britannia gold coin entered the lineup in 1987 specifically to compete with the Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, and American Eagle bullion programs that had captured significant investment demand through the late 1970s and 80s. Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II replaced Raphael Maklouf's third effigy in 1998, the same year this date range opens.
The .9167 fineness — 22 carat — matches the historic Sovereign standard rather than the .9999 purity favored by Canadian and South African competitors, a deliberate nod to centuries of British gold coinage tradition.
