Additional information

The "first sighting" commemorated here refers to the disputed European discovery of the Falklands, a question that remained diplomatically charged in 1992 — barely a decade after the 1982 conflict between Britain and Argentina. Issuing a large-format silver piece asserting a 400-year British connection to the islands was, in that climate, a pointed act of territorial messaging from Stanley.

KM#39 was struck by the Pobjoy Mint in Surrey, which held the Falkland Islands contract through most of the collector series issues of this period.
