The "Gold Standard" branding is a Royal Mint marketing series rather than a reference to any monetary policy — Britain abandoned the gold standard definitively in 1931 and has no institutional obligation tying this coin's gold content to currency backing. These are bullion issues produced under the Coinage Act 1971, with face value serving a legal tender formality that bears no relationship to melt value.
As the first bullion series to carry Charles III's effigy following his accession in September 2022, the 2023 dated issues mark the transition from Jody Clark's long-running Elizabeth II portrait to a new obverse by Martin Jennings.
