Alderney sits five miles off the Normandy coast — closer to the D-Day beaches than any other British Crown Dependency. The Germans fortified it so heavily between 1940 and 1945 that the entire civilian population had been evacuated, making it the only British territory whose inhabitants were not present for the occupation they endured.
