Issued to mark the 80th anniversary of the June 1944 Normandy landings, this coin arrives at a moment when the last surviving veterans of D-Day number in the dozens worldwide. The Royal Mint has produced commemorative gold in this weight class consistently since the 1980s, but the quarter-ounce format only became a regular catalog fixture in the 2000s as collector demand for fractional gold grew.
The .9999 fineness distinguishes it from the older Britannia gold standard of .9167, a purity upgrade the Mint adopted for bullion issues in 2013.
