Issued to mark the beginning of the 15th Islamic century — 1 Muharram 1401 AH fell on November 9, 1980, though Sudan's commemorative program was prepared in advance — this trial strike represents the Bank of Sudan's testing phase before authorizing final production. Trial pieces in gold from Sudanese commemorative issues of this period rarely enter the market, as most were retained by the issuing authority or distributed through official channels to central bank archives.
Sudan's gold commemorative program of the late 1970s was partly driven by the Nimeiry government's increasing alignment with Islamic financial principles, which culminated in the formal adoption of sharia-based banking law in 1983.
