Issued to mark the beginning of the 15th Islamic century — 1400 AH fell in November 1979 — Sudan was one of several Muslim-majority states that produced commemorative coinage for the occasion, though few did so in piedfort format. The piedfort striking, double the normal planchet thickness, was almost certainly aimed at the collector and presentation market rather than circulation, a practice Sudan followed inconsistently across its commemorative program of this period.
1979 was a turbulent year domestically: Nimeiry's government was actively reorienting Sudan toward Islamic law, a process that would culminate in the September Laws of 1983.
