Issued to mark the beginning of the 15th century in the Islamic Hijri calendar — 1400 AH corresponding to late 1979 CE — this coin was produced at a moment when Sudan's government under Nimeiry was actively reshaping national identity around political Islam, a project that would culminate in the formal imposition of Sharia law in 1983. The commemorative gold series from this period was struck in limited numbers for collectors and diplomatic presentation rather than circulation.
