This piece was struck for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, a global initiative that recruited issuing authorities worldwide to mint commemorative coinage promoting food security and agricultural development. The Philippines participated repeatedly in this program during the 1970s and 1980s, using it partly as a vehicle for producing silver issues with export collector markets in mind rather than domestic circulation.
At .500 fineness, the silver content places it firmly in the lower tier of commemorative coinage from the period — a budget-conscious alloy choice common to FAO program participants operating under tight foreign exchange constraints.
