The 1983 series marks a transitional moment in Sudanese monetary history: President Nimeiry's September Laws that same year imposed Islamic banking principles across the country, prohibiting interest and triggering a wholesale restructuring of the financial system. These notes were issued into that instability, and circulated through one of the more disorienting monetary environments in postcolonial African history.
Thomas De La Rue had printed Bank of Sudan issues since the institution's founding, and the relationship showed in the consistency of the series. The 25 Piastres was the lowest fractional denomination in the run — a note more likely worn out in daily market use than preserved.
