Syria's 1945 currency notes were issued under the Caisse Centrale de la France Libre framework but bearing République Syrienne branding — a political compromise reflecting the awkward final years of the French Mandate, when France was simultaneously reasserting colonial authority and nominally recognizing Syrian sovereignty. The notes of this period were printed by the Institut de Emission de Syrie et du Liban, itself a transitional institution caught between French monetary control and the independence declared in 1941 but not yet fully honored.
Syrian forces and the French military came into direct conflict as late as May 1945, the same year this note was issued. Some of this series circulated in genuinely unstable conditions before France formally withdrew.
