Düren's 1919 iron notgeld emerged from the same municipal scramble that drove hundreds of German towns to strike emergency coinage when the central government's coin production collapsed under wartime metal requisitions and postwar supply chaos. Iron was not chosen for its durability — it was what remained after brass, nickel, and copper had been stripped for the war effort. Pieces from this issue corrode readily, and genuinely problem-free survivors are harder to find than catalog frequency suggests.
