Bevern is a small village in Lower Saxony, and its 1921 notgeld issue is a product of the chronic small-change shortage that paralyzed retail commerce across Germany in the early Weimar period. Municipal and parish authorities at every level — including communities as minor as Bevern — were legally permitted to issue emergency fractional currency when coins simply weren't circulating. Conrad Hans of Hamburg handled a substantial volume of this provincial notgeld work, supplying dozens of small issuers across northern Germany.

Short print runs and highly localized redemption windows mean attrition was high. Most were redeemed and pulped within months of issue.
