Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse is framed by a decorative border of interlocking diamond and geometric guilloche patterns with the denomination numeral '25' repeated in each corner in olive-gold tint. A header panel in Fraktur script reads 'Notgeld der Gemeinde Hemdingen', above a central vignette executed in fine letterpress showing two hares emerging from a dense clump of tall grass and tulips rendered in an expressive woodcut style. Below the vignette, a text panel in Kurrent script states the validity clause 'Amtsbezirk Hemdingen / Dieser Schein verliert seine Gültigkeit am 31. Januar 1922 / Der Amtsausschuss Der Amtsvorsteher', followed by two manuscript signatures and a serial number.

Opmerkingen

Hemdingen is a village in Holstein that in 1921 had a population of a few hundred. Like thousands of other German municipalities during the postwar small-change famine, it issued its own emergency paper — Kleingeldscheine — to cover the gap left by the disappearance of metal coins hoarded or melted during and after the war. Konrad Hanf in Hamburg handled printing for numerous small northern German municipalities during this period, producing these notes cheaply and quickly.

The issuing authority here is the Gemeinde itself, not a savings bank or merchants' association — relatively straightforward for the type, and suggesting no particular financial crisis beyond the universal one.
