Freienohl is a small village on the Ruhr river in Sauerland, and like hundreds of similarly sized German municipalities, it issued its own Notgeld during the severe coin shortage of 1917–1921. These fractional paper notes were a local fix for a national problem — metal had been absorbed by the war effort, leaving everyday commerce without small change. The Gemeindekasse, the municipal cashier's office, rather than any banking institution, was the issuing authority here, which was entirely typical for Westphalian village Notgeld.
Freienohl was absorbed into the larger municipality of Meschede in 1975.
