Garstedt was a small rural community in Holstein that, like hundreds of German municipalities in 1921, issued its own emergency paper money — Notgeld — to address a nationwide shortage of small-denomination coinage. The economic disruption following the First World War had effectively drained metal currency from everyday circulation, forcing even minor localities to become their own issuers. Konrad Hanf in Hamburg handled a considerable volume of this municipal printing work across the northern German region, producing competent if unspectacular work for clients who needed functionality over artistry.

The series was likely retired once Reichsbank subsidiary coinage returned in quantity — most Garstedt Notgeld was never meaningfully circulated and survives in collector condition.
