Reverse description The large bold denomination numeral 25 dominates the upper field, flanked on either side by delicate olive or laurel sprigs rising symmetrically from below. Beneath the numeral, the inscription PFENNIG is rendered in capital letters across the middle field. A decorative ribbon bow ornament occupies the lower field, with the Munich mint mark D positioned immediately below it near the inner beaded border. The entire design is contained within a beaded inner circle and plain outer rim.

Additional information

Pattern coinage from the German Empire's final decade rarely reached the public, and this 1908 piece is no exception — it was produced as part of an internal evaluation of possible nickel and tombac alloy substitutes for silver in subsidiary coinage, a cost-cutting exercise that ultimately went nowhere before the war rendered the entire question moot. The silver plating over tombac (a copper-zinc alloy) was a deliberate attempt to mimic the appearance of the existing silver issues while reducing metal costs.
