Warendorf's iron notgeld issues of 1920 belong to the wave of municipal emergency coinage that flooded Germany after World War I, when chronic metal shortages and postwar economic dislocation left local governments scrambling to fill the gap left by an inadequate supply of official Reichsbank coin. Iron was the unglamorous solution — cheap, available, and deeply unpopular with the public, who understood that it corroded and that municipalities issuing it had little accountability for redemption.
