Treptow an der Tollense — today Altentreptow in Mecklenburg — was a small market town that issued this note during the acute coin shortage of 1918, when hoarding and metal requisitions for the war effort had stripped ordinary commercial change from circulation almost entirely. Thousands of German municipalities printed their own Kleingeldersatz that year, and this is one of the more obscure provincial examples, issued by the Magistrat rather than a savings institution or merchant association.
The Tollense River gives the town its distinguishing suffix, added to separate it from other Treptows in the German-speaking world.
