Weimar's 1921 Notgeld series was issued during the hyperinflationary spiral that was dismantling the Reichsmark's purchasing power — small municipalities across Germany printed their own emergency pfennig denominations simply to keep change in circulation when the central supply of low-value coinage collapsed. The city leaned into local identity rather than economics, commissioning a "Sights Series" that used the notes as miniature civic promotion pieces.
Reineck & Klein printed the entire series locally, which was unusual enough — most comparable municipal issues went to larger commercial printers in Leipzig or Berlin. The Herderkirche denomination was deliberately chosen to honor Herder's long association with Weimar, where he served as court preacher from 1776 until his death in 1803.
