Issued at the peak of Germany's postwar inflation crisis, this iron Notgeld piece was one of dozens authorized by Rothenburg ob der Tauber as the central government's coin supply collapsed entirely. Municipal and commercial issuers across Bavaria flooded local economies with emergency coinage in 1921, each piece legally valid only within the issuing community's borders. Iron was the material of necessity — copper and nickel had been consumed by the war effort years earlier and remained scarce.
The Funck cataloguing system remains the primary reference for these Bavarian municipal iron issues, with the suffix "c" designation indicating a specific die variant within the type.
