Rothenburg ob der Tauber issued a series of Notgeld iron coins in 1921 as Germany's postwar metal shortages and inflation made conventional coinage impractical for small transactions. The Plönlein — the city's iconic fork in the road near the Sieberstor — was a deliberate choice by municipal authorities to anchor local identity in circulating currency at a moment when confidence in centralized monetary institutions had collapsed almost entirely.
Iron Notgeld of this period corrodes aggressively, making problem-free survivors considerably scarcer than original mintage figures suggest.
