Issued by the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr as Notgeld during the postwar coinage shortage, when the German Reich lacked both the metal and the minting capacity to keep small denominations in circulation. Municipal and regional authorities across the Rhineland stepped in with their own iron and zinc pieces, many of which were never redeemed — leaving them paradoxically more common in collections today than they ever were in pockets.
