Höhr, a small town in the Westerwald region of Germany, had been a center of stoneware and ceramics production for centuries before the inflation crisis forced municipalities to improvise emergency coinage. The choice of porcelain as a striking medium was no accident — local kilns could produce the blanks with existing infrastructure, and the Meissen and Rosenthal traditions had already demonstrated that fired ceramic could carry impressed designs with reasonable fidelity.
German porcelain notgeld was produced by several Westerwald communities in 1921, each with slightly different clay bodies and firing temperatures, which accounts for the variation in color and density collectors encounter across the series.
