Kahla's 1921 Notgeld series belongs to the so-called "Serienscheine" boom, when hundreds of German municipalities issued collector-oriented small-change notes to profit from the philatelic market as much as to address the chronic coin shortage of the early Weimar period. J. P. Himmer in Augsburg was one of the more prolific printers feeding that market, supplying thematic sets to towns across Thuringia and Bavaria simultaneously.

The "Economics Series" designation suggests a didactic theme common to Kahla issues of this period — the town was already well established as a center of porcelain manufacturing, a trade that survived the inflation years better than most local industries.
