The Bank für Handel und Industrie was a Berlin-based private commercial bank — the Darmstädter Bank, as it was commonly known — and its Greiz branch issued this 25 Pfennig note during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in 1919. Coins had been hoarded or melted, and municipal and commercial entities across the country were authorized to fill the gap with emergency Kleingeldersatz. Greiz, a small industrial town in Thuringia, was no exception.
Branch-issued Notgeld from private banks rather than municipalities is notably less common in collections than the civic variety.
