STADT REMSCHEID 1917
Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse is printed in brown-violet on a cream ground covered entirely by a dense repeating guilloche underprint of florid acanthus scrollwork interspersed with the legend STADT REMSCHEID 1917 in a regular grid pattern. At centre, an octagonal vignette framed by a fine lathe-work border presents an allegorical composition of two female figures — one standing, draped and veiled, the other seated — with an industrial factory skyline visible in the background, evoking the manufacturing heritage of Remscheid. Octagonal panels bearing the numeral 25 are positioned symmetrically to the left and right of the central vignette.

Opmerkingen

Remscheid's Notgeld issues of this period were a direct consequence of the postwar coin shortage that left German municipalities scrambling to cover small-denomination transactions. The city, an industrial center in the Bergisches Land historically tied to tool and cutlery manufacturing, issued these notes under the same emergency provisions that drove thousands of German local authorities to print their own scrip between 1919 and 1922.

Paper Notgeld of this type was often printed in short runs by local print shops with variable quality control, and Remscheid issues from this window are not systematically catalogued by major references — condition and print registration vary considerably across surviving examples.
