Oranienbaum — now Oranienbaum-Wörlitz, Saxony-Anhalt — issued this Notgeld note during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany from 1916 onward, when hoarding stripped coins from everyday commerce faster than the Reichsbank could respond. Thousands of German municipalities printed their own emergency fractions, and the vast majority were handled by local print shops with no particular expertise in security printing. The Buchdruckerei Oranienbaum was exactly that: a town printer producing functional scrip for local use, not a specialist currency house.
The P#1024 series suffix variants (.1 and .2) typically indicate minor typographic or paper differences between print runs rather than distinct issues.
