Dassow is a small town on the Trave estuary in Mecklenburg, just inland from Lübeck — which explains the printer. Gebrüder Borchers in Lübeck supplied emergency currency to numerous municipalities across the region during the Kleingeldnot of the early 1920s, when coin shortages and runaway inflation made small-denomination Notgeld a practical necessity rather than a collector's novelty. A Gemeindekasse issue — from the municipal treasury directly, not a savings bank or commercial house — suggests Dassow had neither the administrative infrastructure nor the budget to commission anything elaborate.
Borchers produced utilitarian, functional notes for this kind of client. No artistic ambition, no local imagery calculated for the collector trade that was by then driving much Notgeld production elsewhere.
